Claims made by Bernie Sanders:

Claim 1:

“87 million uninsured or underinsured, $500,000 — 500,000 Americans every year, going bankrupt because of medical bills” ”

Fact Check 1:

Looks like he’s citing a study published in AJPH.

Claim 2 :

” The fossil fuel industry continues to receive hundreds of billions of dollars in subsidies and tax breaks while they destroy this planet”

Fact check 2:

An IMF Report says the US gave $649 billion in post-tax subsidies to the fossil fuel industry.

Claim 3 :

” tens of millions of people lose their health insurance every single year when they change jobs or their employer changes that insurance”

Fact Check 3:

Claim 4:

” Back in 1988, coming from a state that had no gun control, I called for the ban of the sale and distribution of assault weapons. I lost that election”

Fact Check 4:

An October 26, 1988 article from the Burlington Free Press states that he has said that he would have voted against a recent federal bill mandating a seven day waiting period for gun purchases. Bernie Sanders’ quote from the article: “It’s a local control issue. In Vermont it is not my view that the present law needs any changing… If I were mayor of Washington, D.C., I might have a concern of Saturday night specials.”

A March 30, 1990 article also from the Burlington Free Press notes that Sanders may have won his congressional bid in part due to his opponent having voted in favor of an assault weapons ban.

We could find no source for Sanders’ public call for the ban of the sale and distribution of assault weapons.

Claim 5:

” health care industry made $100 billion in profits last year”

Fact Check 6:

Using the list of companies in an Axios article and net income numbers reported on Macrotrends, I’ve compiled this spreadsheet that shows that in 2018 the health care industry made at least $155 billion in profits.

Claim 6:

” You’re looking, I believe, at the only member of Congress who not only voted against these disastrous trade agreements, NAFTA, PNTR with China, which cost us over 4 million jobs, but also helped lead the effort against these agreements”

Fact Check 6:

House Vote on NAFTA. House Vote on PNTR.
